The Comet Drive-In sits on Morrell Road outside Dunbar, in Fayette County, and runs two screens with digital projection and FM stereo sound on 98.9. Admission is $10 for adults and anyone 12 and over, $5 for children 4 to 11, and free for children 3 and under, cash only for both the box office and the concession stand.

That stand makes its popcorn the old theatre way with coconut oil and popcorn salt, and sells french fries, burgers, hot dogs, pizza slices, pretzels and coffee, closing 30 minutes after intermission. The rules ask that radios be tuned to the drive-in's own station during the show, that SUVs and vans park in the back rows or at either end of a row, and that lawn chairs go directly in front of or behind your car rather than beside it. Dogs are not permitted on the property. On Sunday mornings the same lot becomes a flea market.

Reviews

What visitors say about Comet Drive-In Theater

From 272 visitor reviews, 4.2 stars.

  • The Sunday flea market draws its own crowd

    • Reviewers come for the Sunday morning flea market as much as for the movies, and several describe it as a good place to both buy and sell.
    • Sellers say the crowd peaks between 9 and 10 am and thins out by about 11, with early shoppers arriving before sunrise with flashlights.
    • Opinions on vendor turnout split: one visitor found the lot only about half full, another saw a lot of vendors and plenty to look at.
  • Upkeep and the snack bar draw complaints

    • A repeat visitor said the snack bar had fewer offerings than on a previous trip and felt the place could do better business with more investment.
    • Another mentioned standing water in the driveways and grass that needed cutting.
  • The no-dog rule is enforced unevenly

    • One reviewer was confronted about bringing a puppy while, in their account, other patrons had dogs with them and were not approached.
    • Separate reviewers describe the staff as helpful, including one who was given a jump start when their battery died.
