Before you go

Know before you go

  • The box office opens 7:00 pm*
  • Larger vans and trucks may be required to park in designated areas at the discretion of management; raised hatchbacks must be tied down to roof level or the vehicle parked farther back, and engines may be required to be turned off.
  • Rain or shine, the movie plays
  • On peak-season Friday and Saturday nights the theatre has sold out as early as 45 minutes before the advertised showtime; get there early.
  • Pull your car within two feet of the parking pole rather than centering on it, so your door swings clear without hitting the pole.
  • There is no same-night re-entry: leaving the lot means paying full admission again to get back in.
  • The FAQ says the ticket office opens at 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 8:00 pm Sunday through Thursday; the September 2026 home page says gates open at 7:00 pm Friday through Sunday. Lines can run down the road before opening on busy summer weekends.

History

The history of Transit Drive-In Theatre

Opened August 1, 1952 by a group of Buffalo businessmen, with a single screen and room for 350 cars. The Cohen family, longtime Western New York theater operators, bought the Transit in 1957 and ran it for three generations: Gary (1957-63), Macy (1963-86), and Rick (1987-2022).

A second screen was added in 1994, a third in 1996, a fourth in 2001, when it became the largest drive-in in New York State, and a fifth in 2016. Dipson Theatres acquired the drive-in in March 2022.
